This study is to review the recent research of the Suwon- Temple site, one of the representative Buddhist remains. The temple is believed to have been built while Woongjin(the old name of Kongju) was the capital of the Baekche Dynasty. There are some documents reporting that the temple existed under the king Ui Duk and was located in Woongjin. Especially considering the legend of the Miruk(that is the Saviour) written in Samgukyusa, the temple should have been erected during the Baekche Dynasty.
But close examination of the site shows that the temple was built at the end of the Unified Silla Dynasty or at the beginning of the Koryo Dynasty. It is at the end of the Unified Silla Dynasty that the style of temple changed from the type adapted for the flat area to the one for the mountainous area. The style of the Suwon- Temple should be adapted for the flat area if it had been erected during the Baekche Dynasty. In reality most of temples in Kongju were guessed to be dated to the period of the Baeche Dynasty but were proved to have been erected at the end of the Unified Silla Dynasty. And the style of the temlpes of the latter period was adapted for the mountainous area.
In conclusion, the Suwon-Temple, which at first had been built in the flat area, was moved and rebuilt in the mountainous style. Therefore we can assume that the original Suwon-Temple of the Baekche Dynasty was located at the Gumhak-Dong site, where the old tiles, the nimbus of stone Buddha and the gilt bronze Buddha were discovered.
