There is 25 Tibetan lamaistic surplice in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, U.S. The delicate embroidery design and fine color scheme make it sublime. The surplice symbolizes Buddhism and its spiritual world. Its basis is that some rectangular patches make another rectangular one without being choked. It is the expression of Buddhism that all truth become consistent and it means you can dismiss bad things like being greedy, foolish, jealous.
The surplice had become known to us with Buddhism in Korea in the 4th century. Koguryo's wall painting shows that Korean buddhist had used to wear the surplice. A lamaistic feature had been depicted well in Park ji-won's diary 'Yolha-ilgi' which was a record of Park's experience in China. Yoo deuk-gong had depicted it as Son-eui because the form was similar to Chon-eui which had been used in Cbosun dynasty.
The feature of Tibetan lamaistic surplice is the embodiment of Buddhism through embroidering. We can associate well-ordered 400 embroidery in the surplice with sublime Buddha's world. A dress and its ornament is an important factor of religion as much as a dogma. Nevertheless, there has been no synthetic study about the Asian surplice with Buddhism. A comparative study of the surplice will be carefully considered with regional feature. we need to set up a synthetical system about receptivity and variety of the surplice taking this opportunity.
