It was December 22, 1902 that 121 Korean people left Chemulpo for Hawaii as emigrants. But 101 people out of the initial volunteer group arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 13, 1903 after an additional physical examination in Kobe, Japan. The Korean immigration to Hawaii relocated 7,226 people by 65 shipments until it stopped due to Japanese interference in 1905.
When Koreans were hesitant about immigration, Korean church, particularly the Methodist Episcopal church in West Seoul, encouraged immigration to Hawaii. It is possible to confirm the fact based on the following: First, George H. Jones, a M.E.C. missionary working in the Chemulpo area, strongly encouraged the immigration to Hawaii to the church members and his persuasion resulted in a number of immigration volunteers. Also, with Pastor Jones’ pro-immigration persuasion. Deshler, established the East-West Development Company as immigration agency, cooperated with churches for the relief efforts in Chemulpo, and many Korean church leaders, working at the company, could go to Hawaii with the Korean emigrants as interpreter.
As shown above, the Korean Methodist church was deeply involved in the immigration to Hawaii. As a result of that, though the Korean Christians who immigrated to Hawaii organised Korean churches, the Korean Methodist church in the Chemulpo area had to experience difficulties. The evangelical activity of the area church was so damaged that the number of church members decreased significantly. Around that time, Pastor Jones, was confronted with criticisms because of deeply involving in the immigration, had to return home due to health-related reasons.
The Korean immigrants, most of whom were Christians, spread the gospels and built churches in Hawaii. Some of church leaders arrived in Hawaii and cooperated with American Methodist Pastor Pearson to evangelize Koreans who were scattered in many islands. Therefore the Korean church in Hawaii was founded on the self-sacrifice of the Korean Methodist church in Korea. As there had been such strong ties between the Korean church and the Korean-Hawaiian church. Korean immigrants in Hawaii became afterwards active supporters of the Korean nationalist movement most significantly, and of churches and mission schools in Korea.
