Kwach'on(果川) is the place where Kim Chong-hui(1786~1856) spent his last years. It is believed that during that period, Kim Chong-hui matured his own calligraphy style, so called "Ch'usach'e(秋史體)" and perfected it Kwach'on is a suburb region with a scenery harmoniously aligned by the steep and rocky Mt Kwan'ak, and mild Mt. Ch'onggye. Such a beautiful landscape might have led Kim Chong-hui to accomplish his calligraphy style. Humbly enough, Kim Chong-hui confessed that it was the Kwach'on period of his politically disillusioned time that he finally managed to extract secularity and inferiority from his calligraphy.
Kwajich'odang(瓜地草堂) was a retreat villa where Kim Chong-hui' s father, Kim No-kyong had built un celebration of his own sixtieth birthday That period of time can be marked as the summit of his family since Kim No-kyong was appointed to the Head of Hansong, the capital of the Choson Dynasty, as well as Kim Chong-hul at his age of thirty nine was made a professor of Kyujanggak(奎章閣) After Kim No-kyong passed away and buried m Mt Ch'onggye near to Kwajich'odang, Kim Chong-hui did not leave the villa, but rather had stayed there for three more years Therefore, it is very likely that Kwajich'odang did not remain only as his father's previous retreat villa, but rather became Kim Chong-hui's permanent residence since then It is evident that he spent his last years at Kwajicho'dang since he had been released from banishment up to his death.
The letter written on October 8th, 1852 by Kim Chong-hui reads "On returning the house at Kwach'on and meeting with familiar faces, I feel like being reborn and encountering a whole new world." With regard to this letter, the familar faces might indicate ills son Sang-u's(商佑) family, his brother Sang-hui(相憙), and his close relatives such as Sang-chun(商駿), Sangson Mun-che(文濟), and his uncle No-myong (魯明)'s two sons Sang-il(商一) and Ch'i-che(治濟). Based on the letter, it is assumed that Kwajich'odang had been established as the reunion place of the family.
The site of the Kwajich'odang is presently located over Chuam-dong 179, Kwach'on-si.
Visiting there, I felt that it was a highly appropriate place to reside. On its left, are Oknyohong and Mt. Ch'onggye, and on its right, are Mt. Umyon and Mt Kwan'ak. In between them, are spreading low hills creating a welcoming ambience. The Kwajich'odang has a direct view toward the north western part of Mt. Kwan'ak.
Surrounding the site of the villa, old persimmon, pine and gingko trees create a warm atmosphere There is a well m front of the villa, now dried up because of a large reservoir near by South of the Well, flows a stream, and to its background, lined up stand pine and other various trees on a low hill behind the villa give a picturesque view.
The villa is only 4 km from the Malchuk street and 120 km from the town of Kwach'on, and from the hill behind the villa, the temple of Pong'un-sa where Kim Chong-hui made frequent visits comes into sight.
