This research is a byproduct from our efforts to verify and reproduce the armor of Koguryo in the Special Exhibition and Fashion Show for History and Consciousness: the Air of Koguryo, held in Seoul in November 2000. The first thing we dic for the occasion was a study of the armors in the Koguryo period, on the bases of the written records, excavated specimens, mural paintings, etc. To proceed more effectively with the project, we picked up one sample of the cavalry and one of the infantry from the drawing - the Grand March of the Anak Tomb No.3, from the many soldiers depicted in many different ranks. After a full analyses of the armors of these model soldiers, necessary modifications are made from the additional informations from the Grand March overall, and from other academic researches available. In actual reproduction of the Koguryo armor, the more difficult part was the conflicting goals of the project - the correct verification of the armor on the one hand, and the practical goal of presenting the product as a Fashion Show item. Basically our reproduction efforts was the exact recreation of the shape of the armor in the mural painting, but some additional informations about the armors of the neighboring areas in the same period were considered. For actual exhibition and particularly for a real fashion show, however, there were many limiting factors to be considered - such as the weight of the reproduced armor in view of the model's agility of performance in the show. Even a little compromise was inevitable for a better visual effect of the show. Furthermore time and money were as much limiting as our technical knowhow for the reproduction. But I am sure this kind of efforts is very valuable in our further understanding of the traditional armors in Korea. For a better reproduction of the traditional armors in Korean history, we need to continue these efforts as well as to learn from the Chinese and Japanese reproduction processes and their results.
