The purpose of this paper is to examine linguistic aspects of fantasy revealed
in figures of speeches, mental spaces, and fictive motions from the viewpoint of
the cognitive linguistic conceptualism, and to give them an cognitive
interpretation. The results are as follows:
First, fantasy or visionality means the fictive, hypothetical, abstract,
subjective, and psychological cognitive mechanism of objects as opposed to
factual, realistic, concrete, objective, and physical one.
Second, metonymy and metaphor have fantasy in that metonymic and
metaphoric expressions cannot be interpreted literally. Metonymy has the
conceptual transfer between the target entity and vehicle entity in the
relationship of contiguity, and metaphor has the conceptual transfer between the source domain and target domain in their relationship of similarity. People deal with a lot of situations with the mechanism of metonymy and metaphor including visionality.
Third, mental spaces have the nature of fantasy as an explanation of the cognitive process caused by linguistic structures in the process of conversation, i.e., as a conceptualization of space building. Mental spaces explain effectively the fantasy of the past, future, and hypothetical situations by creating a new
space in the process of conversation.
Fourth, fictive motion has the nature of fantasy, which gives the meaning hypothetical movement to the stationary objects. Relative motion can be explained with the phenomenon of ‘figure-ground’, and mental or psychological motion can be done with the mechanisms of scanning of information and blended spaces. The production and understanding of such fictive motion is a process of the subjective conceptualization of the conceptualizer.
To sum up, fantasy or visionality revealed in everyday language use may be, on the surface, contradiction and a jump of logic, but it has internal order in the process of its conceptualization in its working aspects, and it is significantly motivated with our experiences.
