Korea has adjoined the region of China for a long time, thus the two nations have influenced each other in culture, religion, and thought. The ancient Chinese called the Koreans by the name of 'Ren(人;people)' or 'Yi (夷;foreigner)'or 'Dongyi(東夷;eastern foreigner) This indicates that the Chinese recognized that the Koreans had a high-level culture, because 'Ren(人)' proceeded 'Ren(仁=;humanity)'- the most important concept of Confucianism-and the two characters shared the same meaning. But it is important to know why the ancient Chinese paid the Koreans such compliment, because of the historical fact that Kija(箕子), an idle nobleman of the Yin(殷) dynasty, cultivated the Korean people by moving east after
the fall of his nation. I attempt to clarify the cultural interchange between Korea and China in ancient times. I do not deny that Korea was influenced by China, especially in the culture of Confucianism. But I assert that the culture of these two nations are considerably dissimilar despite the influences. The Zhou(周) dynasty was a turning point in China; Confucius said his thought was based on the culture of the Zhou(周) dynasty. His thought was also based on the Yin(殷) dynasty, which contains mysterious and religious aspects. We have already discovered that the character 'Yi (夷)' was the same as 'Ren(人)' or 'Ren(仁), and referred to ancient Koreans, by investigating the Yin(殷) dynasty's Kapkolmun (甲骨文: omcle bone inscription), which was the earliest mature written language of China. In conclusion, I affirm that Ancient Korea already had a high-level culture before the arrival of Kija(箕子), and had religious and mysterious characters.
