The question of where the epicenter of the Kochosun lay still remains a mystery. According to traditional interpretation based on conventional historical materials, the center of Kochosun constituted the present-day city of Pyongyang. Accordingly, the academic community in North Korea since the 1960s has argued that the center of Kochosun lay not on the Korean peninsula, but around the vicinity of Liaoning. But in 1994, the tomb of Tankun was discovered in the area near Pyongyang, and it was enunciated again that the center of Kochosun lay in the city of Pyongyang. Scholars who were oriented towards nationalism, in contradistinction to those who argued according to the traditional interpretation, viewed the likes of Liaoning as the center of Kochosun. However, all others schools of thought on this issue believed in the traditional argument placed by academics in North Korea who-as they discoverd the Tankun tomb-contrary to their previous standing argues Pyongyang as the center of Kochosun should not be taken as out of ordinary according to the view based on documentary evidence. Because, such argument has returned to its previous standing.
