This study evaluated the axial, torsional, and bending stress concentration factors associated with the fatigue problems of the crankshaft by using theoretical and analytical methods. The theoretical stress concentration factors due to the bending, torsional moments were calculated by using DNV rules, that is Classification Society Rules, respectively. And also we performed Finite Element Analyses in order to calculate stress concentrations and to compare analytical results with theoretical results. In addition, this study investigated the values of stress concentration factors with various crankthrow types in order to supply the better and the more accurate data in the reflection of crankthrow design. As the result of this study, maximum stress concentration factor of crankshaft occurred in the fillet part of crankpin and the bending stress concentration factors obtained by using Finite Element Analysis are similar to the theoretical values but the torsional stress factors calculated by using Finite Element Analysis are higher than the theoretical values.
The results will be used as the theoretical bases of the vibration calculation and be reflected in the design of crankshaft in future.
