Time is remembering and forgetting. We are all selective in our memories, sometimes incomprehensibly so to the outside world. Argentineans are very good at constructing an imaginary past, but they seem unable to unburden themselves from it. The arguments over forgetting and remembering the dirty war in Argentina have raged since it ended in 1983. In forgetting, the selective omission of events, the task to rescue history remains. This article analyzes three instances of this rescue mission in the process of remembering. First, two films, La noche de los lapices and La historia oficial, Second, the present moment and the children of those who were the teenagers of the dictatorship. Third, heux de memoire, the establishment of then memorial to the victims of the slaughter at Sta. Maria Belen, and the battle over the Escuela Mecanica de la Marina, which the Menem government whished to convert to a park of peace. The discusion on these three moments demonstrates the ways in which the politics of the Argentine Holocaust have been routinized, capture the odium and quarrels of the past, and recreate it through a polarized political discourse which, in itself, recreates the atmosphere and feeling of the past without regard to any events real or putative that supposedly took place.
