Carlos Menem assumed the presidency in July 1989 in the midst of raging hyperinflation. Menem government carried out economic adjustment during his first term in office(1989-1995) along the lines of the neoliberalism.
The Argentines' standard of living, specially in the subclass, became worse in the process of the privatization and deregulation. Many people, therefore, thought that Argentines would resist to the neoliberal economic adjustment. However, that was not realized. Argentines accepted and supported the neoliberal economic adjustment to avoid the expected risk of great economic misfortune though the policies caused unemployment, wage cuts and worsened working conditions.
We can understand this situation through many variables, such as the worst economic condition, the disunited working class, and the state's role. This article focuses on the state's role in gaining support for the neoliberal policies. Menem government persuaded Argentines that the government had to carry out the neoliberal economic adjustment to solve the hyperinflation problem. And Menem government offered the social and economic compensation for losses by the neoliberal economic adjustment. And Menem government divided and controled the working groups to block the possibility to oppose the neoliberal economic adjustment.
Argentines withdrew the acceptance and the support for the neo-liberal economic adjustment after the economy relapsed into the crisis during the Menem's second term of office(1995-2000). Unfortunately, Argentina was a typical example of a failure in persistent economic growth and social order.
