Yum Sang-soeb(廉想涉) and Kim Dong-inn(金東仁) are the representative men in the beginning of modern Korean literary history. They disputed each other for the matter, 'what is literature' and 'what is criticism'. This paper is an attempt to interpret and decide the meaning or significance of that dispute. Basically I see the event of that dispute is the starting point of Korean modern literary criticism.
Why this event of dispute is the starting point of Korean modern literary criticism can be explained through various points of view. First, It was a big social or cultural event in the beginning of modern Korean literature. Trough that event the world of Korean modern writers built their individual world, and They could create the peculiar world of (literary) criticism And in the course of that event a formal column, named 'monthly criticism', in magazine editing was created. So, if we lay stress on those facts mentioned above, we can decide the significance of that dispute event by the starting point of Korean modern literary criticism.
But, the meaning or significance of that dispute event stop on the historical dimension. Because the point of their dispute on 'what is criticism' is still the present matter, so that a nowaday's problem. So, we can give the meaning of radical debate on that dispute event, so we can decide that event by the original point of Korean modern literary criticism.
