The academic journal Hakjigwang(Lux Scientiae, "The Light of Science"), which was published in 1914 by Korean students studying in Tokyo, has a very important meaning in the history of Korean literature. This essence, 'the satisfaction of the sense', was the aesthetic thought which allowed human beings to be reborn sensual beings. This was expressed by romantic grammar and rhetoric, or had the methodical strategy of aesthetic thought, which was referred to as 'choice and exclusion'. These Korean students' aesthetic thought was the primary reason that Korean literature could be aesthetic.
Korean students' aesthetic thought, its romantic tendency, and the methodical strategy are all the result of the trans lingual practice according to their self-assertive tendency about the Japanese literature from 1800 to 1910. To devise a new literary discourse, the literary essay of Hakjigwang is important as the first example which refers to the Japanese and Western circumstances.
Two modern tendencies about the identity of individual discourse assisted a self-directed individual, justified the demand of self-expression and became the students' aesthetic thought and the background of its romantic tendency. The students discovered themselves through aesthetic thought under the circumstances of collapsing the feudal class system of Cho-sun society, and became the aesthetic subject who could find a new law through free introspection. In addition, they seemed to get the idealogical models of identification which were needed to make modern programs.
This means that the students considered self-discovery as the best value through the aesthetic, while denying moral and public norms. Therefore, their literary essay is fundamentally similar to the Western aesthetic after the enlightenment.
Under the historical situation of colonial Cho-sun, reorganizing sensual experience was prohibited. The students were interested only in sensual and physical life and denied tradition. In addition, it is also very important to consider something to be separated from oneself and something to transcend oneself as the ethic of the feudal society or traditional literary discourse.
The aesthetic literary essay had influenced the romantic tendency of Korean literature in 1920s. This is what the journal, Hakjigwang implies. Therefore, we have to start from the literary essay of Hakjigwang to examine the genealogical table of the aestheticism in the Korean history of the modern literature.
