This study aims to reconsider the theoretical characteristics what have been the theories of literature in Hakjikwang published in 1910’s. In many studies, it is supposed that those theories intended to acquire aesthetic autonomy. But it just doesn’t seem to accord with the history of Korean literature.
In fact, the literary mans in that time didn’t think that an individual and community are opposed to each other. Instead, they hopped to reconcile personality with publicity.
It is confirmed through their definition of literature that composed of emotion(情) and meaning(意). The literary mans such as Choi, Du-Seon and An, Whak actually didn’t recognize those as different thing but it must be together. And then, although a little difference, their recognition look similar to that one such as Shin, Chae-Ho or Lee, Kwang-Su who was typical literary man in the previous period.
In this sense, it would be fair to say that their theories has been changed into proper form for the new situation.
It is also confirmed in the cases of Choi, Seung-Gu and Kim, Eok who had more practical theory. These are recognized the importance of presonality most of all but also didn’t deny that of publicity.
For they considered that it is the practice that makes the value of literature. Therefore they rejected Art for Arts Sake temporarily.
