<Wolbonggi(月峯記) is an adapted novel from a Chinese short story of the Ming Dynasty, <Sojihyunrasamjaihap(蘇和縣羅衫再合)> and is reconstructed as a creative novel. This work is different from the usual adapted novel, because only the opening part of the story is adapted from <Sojihyunrasamjaihap> and the rest of the story is created and added to the original Chinese one. The time of writing is presumed to be the period from the later 17th century to early 18th century. So, <Wolbonggi> is written in a very early period in the Korean Novel history with <Guunmong(九雲夢) and <Sukhyangjeon(淑香傳)>.
Originally, <Wolbonggi> had characteristics of <Boudoir Novel(閨房小說)> or <Gibong Novel(奇峰小說)>, and many varied versions like <Wolbongsangi(月峰山記)> <Sounjeon(蘇雲傳), <Sohaksajeon(蘇學士傳)>, <Bonghwanggum(鳳凰琴)> existed. In this aspect, it is certain that <Wolbonggiryu(月峯記類):varied versions of Wolbonggi)> were very popular and welcomed by the contemporary readers. In the process, <Wobonggiryu> have accepted the characteristics of Korean Classical Novels and adopted the elements of <Gundam Novel(軍談小說)>, <Gamon Novel(家門小說)>, <Jeokgang Novel(謫降小說)>.
Furthermore <wolbonggiryu> reveal intertextuality with <Guunmong>, <Sukhyangjeon> and others.
There remain corresponding elements to the Koreans' sentiments and views of the world in <Sojihyunrasamjaihap>, <Wolbonggi>'s original source, forming the reasons for the adaptation. Later, <Wolbonggiryu> extensively adopted representative characteristics of the contemporary Korean Classical Novels and became more like Korean ones(novels of the Chosun Dynasty). Since <Wolbonggiryu> were originally adapted creative novels, they developed into Korean style faster than other adapted works. It is meaningful in the history of the novels that the process of adaptation and creation happened not once but repeatedly.
On the other hand, <Wolbonggiryu> supplied the materials of <Gangneungchuwoljeon(江陵秋月傳)> and helped the creation of the different editions of the creative novel. So the adapted novels from the Chinese works have greatly influenced in the development of Korean Classical Novels and those adapted novels did not remain as adapted ones but worked as a medium in creating new novels.
