Although there have been substantial research studies done on Yulrleryu yeokhakseo(類解類譯學書), a collection of dictionaries including Yeokeo Yuhae (Chinese-Korean), Dongmun Yuhae (Manchu-Korean), Mongeo Yuhae (Mongolian-Korean) and Wae-eo Yuhae (Japanese-Korean), they are far from being enough. Some of the Korean words appearing in these dictionaries have yet to define explicitly.
Given that defining words is the primary task of vocabulary research, the considerable amount of undefined words indicates that the Korean language academics have been neglecting their basic duties.
In the paper I chose 16 words that were defined incorrectly or not at all from Yeokeo Yuhae, the earliest of these pulications, and determined the exact meaning of them
The words I chose are as follows:
1) 갸군하- : to twist (a suspect's) legs as a torture
2) 에워나디 못하다 : cannot to undertake
3) 지의 : imperial order
4) 초취 : first blowing
5) 무루처오다 : to retreat and hit and come, to retreat and follow
6) 머롱태 : a half-wit, a fool
7) 낫곳하다 : to get angry
8) 아감좃다 : to hop on one leg
9) 졎아비 : husband of a wet nurse
10) 감인 : fruit of a prickly water lily
11) 실왼테 : intact skein of thread
12) 믈여믈르다 : to form ears of grain
13) 각기 소리 : a square chest with drawers
14) 입치기만 생각하다 : to devour
15) 마드다 : to be tempted by a devil
16) 빗저이 와 겨시 : to extol one's parents
Of the above words, two words (No. 1, 13) are loadnwords and other two words (No. 5, 16) are written incorrectly and therefore can't be explained exactly.
