This dissertation deals with Ham Se-Deok's drama, 'A Priestling'. Compared with his other works, 'A Priestling' reads well on account of its strong structure, the creating of independent characters, beautiful words, lyric mood, etc, and this has led to produce more achievement of 'A Priestling' than that of other works.
In spite of its established result of study that 'A Priestling' is author's masterpiece, however, it seems that it lacks somewhat of analyzing the content closely of the work itself which contains performance nature. Especially, it is true that approach to performance nature hasn't yet taken a concrete shape, in that a drama is written on the assumption of putting it on the stage. In fact, what clearly tells a drama from another genre is that it is planned to be staged. Drama touches the senses of audience through being staged and it communicates with a role play. That is, drama is 'a play which shows through acts'. This implies how much meaning performance or communication in drama has. Performance nature has the very meaning that it look out over characteristics of drama on the assumption of being putting on the stage. Dramatist's recognition revealed in works can be said to be tied to the intrinsic value of drama literature. Namely, the work that author considers performing qualities along with results studying literary texts, represent the characteristics of drama literature best. For this, in this dissertation, I closely analyze the text on the basis of preceding study. It is because it is possible to make clear literary approach and performing characteristics by interpreting hidden structure and meaning of a underplot behind the content of the outside and ultimately to carry out the assessment of value of the text correctly. In doing so, you can draw near consciousness or mental expressions which the author intends to represent. As a result, it is the truthful analysis about the text that exactly reveals aesthetic nature and value of the text, along with possibility of new interpretation.
In conclusion, the art value of ' A Priestling' shines more brilliantly when it can be said that exact drama analysis is to synthesize and analyze all dramatical elements(?). It proves that author creates the work, considering performance nature enough such as the disposition of characters and the aspects of conflict for the subject of the text, usage of object and so on. The value of 'A Priestling' becomes certain through truthful analysis of the text.
