Okzisan, a compound remedy for oral disease in Korean traditional medicine was selected to investigate its ability to lessen oral malodor. The clinical examination using Halimeter employed 20 dental students from Dankook University, Chunan, Korea who had neither oral malodor nor dental disease. To induce artificial malodor, 10 cc of 5 tooth brushing, gargling with a commercially-available solution and gargling with a solution containing Okzisan. The medicinal herb extracts showed strong deodorant effects at the clinical examination. For further analysis, in addition to Okzisan, four kinds of medicinal herbs (Gamcho, Seungma, Zigolpy, Hwanggum) which are common constituents of Okzisan as well as other herbal remedy for oral diseases were compared by means of antimicrobial and gas chromatography. The analysis by gas chromatography a1so revealed that all extracts in this study had excellent effect on oral malodor and showed, in particular, that Seungma was more effective than Okzisan and other constituents, while their antimicrobial activities were negligible. From these results, it is thought to be that the deodorant gargle solution containing the extracts from Okzisan and other medicinal herbs such as Zigolpy. Seungma. Gamcbo and Hwanggum would be effective for oral malodor and somewhat safer for normal oral flora compared to the current chemical gargle solutions with antimicrobial effect.
