Since 1960's cities of Korea have rapidly expanded in the midst of fast industrialization and the residences born from this industrial process have become antiquated and are now a target for redevelopment. The residences constructed until now, have been built with plans based on data from western countries. However, houses currently being built still have many problems and have not properly satisfied even the fundamental goals of the redevelopment. In other words, these houses have been built without the consideration of the people's living pattern and the level of their living standard; they have been built uniformly under the mere slogan of `improvement of living'. The newly built housing were out of rich financialy to the low-income resident; therefore, 90% of the original residents of the redeveloped area have been driven out to another squatter area. Such redevelopment process lies in the direction of separating the low income community from the rest of society. Rather than trying to embrace them, the traditional concept of "WE" is replaced by the corporate concept of "GROUP". Present antiquated houses, called "squatter housing" on the hillside of the city, have quite a number of positive usage of small and hidden spaces. In this study, rather than redeveloping the chosen site aimed at the upper middle income family, Thus continuing the vicious cycle of the recent redevelopment, warmer attention is given to the improvement of the existing condition for the residing community. By investigating a chosen squatter area, the multi-use alley space may find its newer definition as a communal space.
