This paper examines the nature of obsolescence and change as they
affect the physical requirements of space, particularly in
hospital environments.
As changes have a direct impact on physical obsolescence, the
mismatch between the existing space and the theoretically optimal
space required to perform a given function is analyzed.
Data from the four hospital surgical departments were collected
and used for this purpose.
Two models are presented for this research:
First the conceptual relationship for deriving theoretical medel
is proposed, and the seconed is a model for assessing the degree
of mismatch between functional and physical requirements of
surgical departments.
