The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of lower limb exercise rehabilitation program applied in this study on muscular strength and balance through measuring lower limb girth and balance, and to develop the improvement indicator through analyzing the correlation between lower limb girth and balance. Subjects were 16 athletes (male 9, female 7) participated in exercise rehabilitation after sports injury in lower limb. Pre-test was performed on the first measurement day, and post-test was on the day when muscle girth was maximal. Thigh girth was the maximal girth in vastus medialis oblique, calf girth was the maximal girth in gastrocnemius. Balance was measured from 1st step (one leg standing on the floor with open eye) to 5th step (one leg standing on the TOGU with closed eye) with raising degree of difficulty. Exercise rehabilitation program for knee injury was applied for 10∼30 wks, 4 times per week, 6 hours per time. Exercise rehabilitation program for ankle injury was applied for 18∼38 wks, 4 times per week, 6 hours per time. As a result, thigh and calf girth on involved side were significantly increased after applying lower limb exercise rehabilitation program (p < .001). Balance in both sides was significantly increased after applying lower limb exercise rehabilitation program (p < .001). But no significance was shown in correlation between lower limb girth and balance. In conclusion, lower limb exercise rehabilitation program applied in this study was shown to be effective on improvement in muscular strength and balance of involved side. And it is suggested that lower limb exercise rehabilitation program and measurement method in this study should be applied sports field as well as clinical field.
