Impact of Job Stress, Health Status, Health Promotion Behavior on Retention Intention among Emergency Room Nurses
This study is a descriptive study to investigate how to the job stress, health status, and health promotion behavior affect emergency room nurses’ retention intention.
Data were collected from 155 nurses who have worked in the emergency room for more than 6 months among the 15 emergency rooms in G city. The data collection period is from October 15, 2020 to November 3, 2020.
Data analysis used t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe’s test, Pearson''s correlation, and stepwise regression analysis with SPSS 26.0.
The results of this study are as follows.
1. The general characteristics of this study were that the average age was 29.04±5.92 years, the average clinical experience was 67.20±68.90 months, and the emergency room work experience was 44.14±41.90 months.
2. The average degree of job stress was 3.49±0.60 points, health promotion behavior was 2.49±0.36 points, health status was 2.42±0.60 points and retention intention was 4.41±42 points.
3. The Retention intention of this study according to the general characteristics
showed statistically difference accorkding to clinical history(F=4.370, p=.014), fatigue(F=7.460, p=000), current medical history(t=2.151, p=.033).
4. The relationship between job stress and health status (r=0.368, p=.000), health promotion behavior and retention intention (r=0.229, p=.004) showed statistically significant positive correlations, The relationship between job stress and health promotion behavior (r=-0.310, p=.000), job stress and retention intention(r=-0.220, p=.006), health status and health promotion behavior(r=-0.448, p=.000), health status and retention intention(r=-0.296, p=.000) showed statistically significant negative correlation.
5. Factors influencing the retention intention were fatigue(β=-0.191, p=.018) and health status (β=-0.176, p=.035). The total explanatory power was 14.1%.
As a result of this study, it was confirmed that there is a correlation between job stress, health status, health promotion behavior, and retention intention of emergency room nurses, and that fatigue and health status influence the retention intention. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to improve the working environment of medical institutions and to manage employees in order to increase retention intention.
