The purpose of this study was to identify effects of dementia knowledge, attitude and professionalism on nursing care of dementia patients.
Method : Study design was a cross-sectional descriptive survey. Participants were 184 nurses who work at 8 geriatric hospitals in D city and K region. Data were collected from September 4th to 11th, 2018. Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson''s correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis performed using IBM SPSS statistics 24.0 program.
Results : Dementia care knowledge score was 73/100. Attitude toward dementia was 4.66/7 and nursing professionalism was 3.56/5. Care of dementia patients showed score of above average with 3.07/4. Groups had graduate education and dementia education were shown a higher score of dementia care. There was a significant relationship of dementia care and nursing professionalism (r=.35, p<.001). Dementia care performance was correlated to attitude towards dementia significantly (r=.51, p<.001) and nursing professionalism was also significantly correlated to attitude towards dementia (r=.35, p=.001). In stepwise multiple regression analysis, explanation rate was 36.1% of total variance and care of patient with dementia was affected by attitude towards dementia (β=.40), dementia education (β=.21),nursing professionalism (β=.18), and education level(β=.14)
Conclusion : There is a need to develop an education program enhancing positive attitude towards dementia and establishing dementia education for dementia care.
