This paper is a study on the reduction of tunnel concrete lining re-bar. The concept of concrete design in Korea is stipulated in the design standard to have the mechanical function as the structure, and the load combination is considered for the different loads that may be generated in the lining design. In the calculation of the concrete lining of tunnel, the same analysis method as that of the conventional tunnel method is applied due to the absence of the analysis method which can reasonably consider the interaction between the ground and the lining, and this is the main factor of excessive reinforcement of the concrete lining. Therefore, to reduce the load scale and to estimate the safe loadof the concrete lining is necessary for economical design. In this research, the characteristics and problems relevant to tunnel concrete lining are reviewed. And the results are compared with the field measurement data. In addition, numerical analysis was also performed in order to evaluate economically the tunnel concrete lining considering the several design factors. The results show that the amount of re-bar is varied according to the design factors. That is, the required amount for re-bar in the tunnel concrete lining could be reduced in the design stage. The results of this study may be useful for economic design of concrete lining in the future.
