It has been quite common for various people including teachers and speech-language pathologists(SLPs) to have negative perception toward stuttering. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there would be significant differences in the kindergarten teachers’ perception toward stuttering according to direct stuttering education and personal experiences. In the current study 96 kindergarten teachers were divided equally into two groups randomly; one group was shown a stuttering education video while the other group was not. Participants were asked to complete modified version of “Teacher Attitudes toward Stuttering(TATS)” and list five adjectives describing children who stutter(CWS) and who do not stutter(CWNS). The results showed that there were significant differences in the scores of seven items out of 33 TATS items according to video watching. There were also differences in the TATS items according to age, career year, and experiences of CWS, but the number of TATS items of differences were limited. Those with older age, longer career, more experiences with CWS showed improved attitudes. Moreover, CWS were described more negatively than CWNS while teachers who watched the video indicated more positive adjectives. The results of this study showed that kindergarten teachers in Korea would have negative stereotypes toward CWS. However the current study provided empirical support that direct education on stuttering can be beneficial in improving attitudes toward stuttering.
