This is a study on the hairstyle of aristocratic class women in
Gaya.
Gaya was built around CE (Common Era) and it lasted 600 years
with Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla until DaeGarak was collapsed in 532
and DaeGaya was collapsed in 562. The Three State period lasted
only 98 years since Gaya was collapsed. Even though Gaya culture
represent Gyeongsangnamdo Province culture, literatures and data of
Gaya culture is absolutely limited. Therefore, studying and analyzing
local people’s hairstyle based on literature, relic, or mural will be a
cultural legacy which will represent local culture.
To find out about aristocratic class women’s hairstyle, I studied the
cultural characteristrics of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla and analyzed
the aristocratic class women’s hairstyle chronologically. Based on
these information, I was able to organize into two hair style and
make more detailed art work with the design illustrations that I
drew. I made questionnaires based on findings and handed out to 30
experts. I asked about difference between general characteristics by
jobs, location of a Gae in the shape of the head, location of a head
shape and a characteristics in a standard portrait, and effect on
wearing a crown on my questionnaires. WIth these information, I was
able to come up with two different hair styles and make more
detailed art work after I was done with illustration. I used two
mannequins to create two different hairstyles. One was with a gold
bronze crown (Geumdonggwan) and the other one was without a
gold bronze crown (Geumdonggwan).
Followings are the conclusion of the study.
First,
I found out that Goguryeo had HiljaGae, Baekje had SangGae , and
Silla had Gae.
Second,
Art work 1 shows a ‘GoGae’ on the front head and small hanging
‘Jok’ on the back of the head.
Third
Art work 2 shows a ‘SangGae’ on the front head and big hanging
‘Jok’ by using ‘gache’ on the back of the head.
Analyzing and reproducing the hair style of aristocratic class woman
chronologically had limits from different types of literature, mural,
published these, visiting the historical sites and so on. After
analyzing the aristocratic class women’s hair style. So, instead of
reproducing aristocratic class women’s hair style truthfully, I focused
on making a creative art work by adding unique hairstyling technique
to classic hair style based on known and inferred data.
As this research was progressed, I was impressed by our
ancestor’s creative hair styles and their techniques. Even though
empress Huh of Gaya, her hairstyle should have been raised up
because of her aristocrat status, I see normal hairstyle with a Guan
(crown) many times because there isn''t enough studies on traditional
headdress.
I hope that there will be more theses not only on ancient women’s
hair style but also in hair style of woman in Gaya more variously
and specifically.
