This study was carried out to compare differences in efficacy and ingredient of white ginseng(WG), red ginseng(RG) and black ginseng(BG). For this, in-vitro cytotoxicity test, anti-oxidative activity test, anti-inflammatory activity test were conducted. The results are as follow;

1. Cytotoxicity of WG, RG and BG was evaluated at 1, 10, 100 (㎍/㎖) concentration,
WG, RG and BG showed survival rate of more than 95% of cells in all concentrations, and on this basis, WG, RG and BG were found to be safe.

2. The results of total polyphenol analysis of WG, RG and BG, WG, RG and BG were 105.4±0.7 ㎎/g, 115.6±1.0 ㎎/g, 167.5±2.2 ㎎/g respectively and BG had the highest amount of total polyphenol.

3. In DPPH radical scavenging test, WG, RG and BG were 29.9±2.7%, 25.4±1.2%, 35.2±1.9% at 1000 ㎍/㎖ respectively, and BG showed higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than WG and RG.

4. In ABTS radical scavenging test, WG, RG and BG were 31.8±3.8%, 32.7±2.0%, 59.6±2.5% at 1000 ㎍/㎖ respectively, BG showed the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity.

5. The result of ROS production test showed that ROS production of WG and RG decreased depending on concentration and ROS production of BG was lower than that of WG and RG at all concentrations.

6. The result of NO production test showed that there was higher inhibition rate in RG and BG than WG. RG had higher inhibition rate than BG at 10, 100 ㎍/㎖.

7. The result of PGE2 production test showed that WG, RG and BG were 48.6±5.3%, 58.4±3.7%, 80.4±6.5% at 100 ㎍/㎖ respectively, WG had the highest inhibition rate of PGE2 production.

8. The result of inflammatory cytokine (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) production test was as following. In case of IL-1β production test, WG, RG and BG were 53.0±2.4%, 54.8±4.8%, 61.6±2.9% respectively. WG and RG seem to have much effect on reducing IL-1β production than BG. In case of IL-6 production test, WG, RG and BG reduced IL-6 production at all concentrations in a dose dependent manner and WG, RG and BG were 83.5±0.4%, 67.7±0.6%, 61.1±2.4% at at 100 ㎍/㎖ respectively. BG had the largest effect on reducing IL-6 production. In case of TNF-α production test, there was no difference among WG, RG, BG and contrl group, which meant that WG, RG and BG didn''t have effect on the decrease of TNF-α production.

This comparative study on anti-oxidative activity, anti-inflammatory activity could be useful as basic data for the development of functional food and the fabrication of safe cosmetic.
