STEAM education is required as convergent problem solving ability on various domains is necessary to deal with problems in the future. The studies on STEAM education are now actively underway from elementary school to college. Among them, the studies on students’ subject-specific interest and their learning attitude demonstrate that STEAM education programs based on subject matter positively affect students’ learning attitude. Yet, there has been virtually no published research on STEAM program based on social studies.Accordingly, STEAM education programs based on social studies were in need to help students get interested in social studies and improve their learning attitude. This study was thus designed to develop history-based STEAM education program and to see the effect of the program on elementary students’ learning attitude in social studies. To accomplish these goals, the study proceeded in the following steps.First, the STEAM program for history-centered STEAM lesson in elementary social studies was developed.Second, The effect of history-centered STEAM lesson on elementary students’ learning attitude in social studies was analyzed.A history-centered ‘travel back into the past’ STEAM program was developed and applied to one fifth grade class in elementary school ‘M’ in Paju-si in Gyeong-gi Province. The learning attitude test in social studies was developed by Seo-jung-ho in 2002 and revised by Choi-jong-hoon in 2009. The categories ‘self-admiration’, ‘self-confidence’, ‘interest’, ‘a sense of purpose’, ‘achievement motivation’, ‘attention concentration’, autonomy’, ‘peer relationship’ were set up as sub factors in the learning attitude test. First, the pre-test was carried out to see the students’ learning attitude on social studies. After conducting history-centered STEAM lessons in social studies comprised of 5 topics(10 instructional units), the post-test was undertaken to investigate the impact of the STEAM lessons on students’ learning attitude in social studies. The result of the study was as follows.First, history-centered STEAM program in social studies was effective for improving students’ overall learning attitude.Second, Among sub factors of students’ learning attitude, history-centered STEAM lesson in social studies made positive changes in ‘self-admiration’, ‘self-confidence’, ‘interest’, ‘a sense of purpose’, ‘achievement motivation’, and ‘attention concentration’. But it did not contribute to the improvement of ‘learners’ autonomy’ and ‘peer relationship’.This study indicates that history-centered STEAM lesson in social studies has positive impact on students’ learning attitude in social studies. Furthermore, it implies that not only researches on STEAM program focused on science and math but studies on STEAM program based on social studies and other subjects should be actively conducted and their result should be widely implemented in school settings.
