This study focuses on the compositional and physical characteristics of hwajohwa
(Korean traditional folk paintings of flowers and birds) and on people’s misunderstanding of
the objects represented in such paintings in connection with the figurative symbolism
contained in them.
As regards the general composition and appearance of hwajohwa, a laid-out and
symmetrical composition, complanation, reverse perspective for imposition of symbolical
meaning, and synchronousness for expression of time were adopted. The adoption of such
compositional forms and shapes appears to have been a result of the artists’ focus on the
symbolism contained in each subject associated with people’s wishes.
