The present study investigated which type of written corrective feedback is more effective for Korean university students to improve their grammatical accuracy involving English verb complementation errors: metalinguistic feedback or exemplar-based written corrective feedback. This study also investigated how the learners perceived the feedback they received on their errors. Metalinguistic feedback provided learners with some form of explicit comments on verb complementation. In contrast, exemplar-based feedback gave students some examples of verb complementation so that learners may infer grammatical rules without explanations. This study was conducted in a regular TESOL major course as a special project to improve students’ grammatical accuracy in writing. Fifty-two students were divided into two groups: metalinguistic feedback group and exemplar-based feedback group. A sentence completion test and a narrative writing test were administered to measure the learners’ verb complementation knowledge before and after the treatment (pre- and post-test). For the treatment sessions, the learners watched part of a Korean movie, and were given brief information about the target verbs and their complementation options, and then were asked to write a summary of the movie part they just watched. The students were given corrective feedback on their writings depending on the group they belonged to. This procedure lasted for eight weeks. The results revealed that both feedback types were beneficial. Students in both groups significantly improved their verb complementation knowledge. Though there was no significant difference between both, more learners preferred exemplar-based feedback to metalinguistic feedback.
