This paper is a study on adaptation to college life of foreign students in Korea. For this, I examined how their human capital, course work, major, and satisfaction for university service affect social relations. And I also analyzed whether or not the social relations had an indirect effect on Adaptation to college life and what it had a direct effect on adaptation of one. I hope that this study contribute to policy proposal for foreign students through prevention of their dropping out and effective training talented individuals. The specific result is as follows.
First, friendship by themselves had no effect on human capital variable. On the other hand, the factors of satisfaction for university services are meaningful. And the other friendship(Foreign students-Korean sutudent/many others) had a positive effect on all of them: English speaking ability, course works/tuition, and carer guidance/advice. The professor-student relations are meaningful for all factors of university services. But the only support for social life stability among them had a negative effect on that relations. Most of all, it is unusual thing that Korean speaking ability has a negative effect on friendship(Foreign students-Korean sutudent/many others) during the graduate course.
Second, among human capital, Korean speaking ability had a negative effect on satisfaction for college life. But, in case of College of Natural Sciences, their English speaking ability had a positive effect on grades.
Third, The direct effect of a course work/tuition(among factors of university services) is positive, but it makes a dent total effect of grades through indirect effect of profesor-student relations. But it had a positive effect on satisfaction for college life. The Career guidance/advice had a negative effect on both grades and satisfaction for college life, and it had more negative effect on grades because of indirect effect of professor-student. And, in the only natural sciences major, it was positive due to indirect effect of friendship(Foreign students-Korean sutudent/many others). The support for social life stability had no effect on grades, but, in case of liberal arts, it took positive effect. And also, it took directly positive effect on satisfaction for college life.
We can make three institutional proposal from these results. Firstly, it has to consider not only Korean speaking ability but English speaking ability to decrease foreign student wastage rates and to raise up competent people. Secondly, I want to suggest “Home Room Teacher System for Foreign Students” to improve professor-student relations and career guidance/advice. Lastly, it needs Cooperatvie Learning System.
