본 연구는 제2언어 신문기사를 이용한 모국어 요약쓰기 과업이 제2언어 단기 및 장기 어휘 기억에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이 영향을 조사하기 위해 모국어 요약쓰기 과업과 함께 모국어 문장 번역, 빈칸 채우기, 그리고 이해 질문 과업을 비교하였다. 본 연구는 또한 피실험자의 단기 및 장기 어휘 기억에 있어서 그들의 제2언어 어휘 지식, 지문의 난이도, 그리고 과업 유도 관여도에 따른 다양한 과업 유형들과 비교하였다. 본 연구는 이에 더해 피실험자의 제2언어 어휘 지식과 과업 간의 상호작용이 있는지를 밝히고 그에 따른 제2언어 단기 및 장기 기억에 미치는 영향이 있는지를 분석하였다. 특히 모국어 요약쓰기 과업을 통한 제2언어 어휘 기억이 학생들의 제2언어 어휘 지식과 모국어 요약하기 과업수행 능력에 상관없이 효과적으로 일어날 수 있는지를 알아보기 위해 제2언어 어휘 지식과 모국어 요약쓰기 집단의 요약쓰기 수준 간의 상호작용이 있는지를 분석하였다.
본 연구는 다양한 전공으로 구성된 127명의 부산 소재의 한 대학교 학생들을 연구대상으로 하였으며 이들은 영어로 된 두 개의 신문기사를 읽고 각 집단 별로 다른 과업을 수행하였다. 분석을 위한 자료는 피실험자들의 영어어휘지식평가 (the Vocabulary Size Test), 각 과업 수행, 그리고 1차, 2차 사후평가를 통해 수집되었다. 자료 분석을 위해 일련의 대응표본T검정, 일원배치분산분석, 다변량분산분석, 그리고 분할구획요인분석이 사용되었고 이를 통해 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 먼저 모국어 요약쓰기 집단이 다른 집단들에 비해 일반적으로 제2언어 단기 및 장기 어휘 기억에 더 효과적이었고 과업 유형과 지문의 난이도간의 상호작용에 있어서도 제2언어 단기 및 장기 어휘 기억에 미치는 효과가 모국어 요약 쓰기 집단에서 다른 집단들 보다 더 크게 나타났다. 두 번째로 피실험자의 제2언어 어휘 지식이 제2언어 단기 및 장기 어휘 기억에 미치는 영향은 제한적이었고 어휘 지식과 지문의 난이도간의 상호작용 또한 확인되지 않았다. 세 번째로 과업 유형과 제2언어 어휘 지식간의 상호작용이 제2언어 어휘 기억에 미치는 영향에 대한 분석에서도 두 변수간의 상호작용이 확인되지 않았다. 마지막으로 모국어 요약 수준과 제2언어 어휘 지식이 제2언어 어휘 기억에 미치는 영향에 대한 분석에서도 두 변수간의 상호작용이 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 결과를 통해 본 논문은 높은 과업 유도 관여도를 가진 모국어 요약쓰기 과업에서 더 효과적인 제2언어 어휘 기억이 일어날 수 있음을 시사함과 동시에 제2언어 학습에서 모국어를 활용한 과업이 효과적일 수 있다는 점을 제시하였다.

This study examines the effects of L1 summarization of L2 newspaper articles on short-term and long-term retention of L2 vocabulary as a byproduct of the task. In order to verify the effects, three other tasks are examined along with L1 Summary Writing (SW): L1 Sentence Translation (ST), Gap-Fill (GF), and Comprehension Question (CQ). This study also explores how subjects’ performance on the immediate and the delayed posttests would vary depending on their L2 vocabulary size, text readability, and task types with different task-induced involvement loads. Furthermore, the effects of the interaction between subjects’ L2 vocabulary size and type of task on their short-term and long-term L2 vocabulary retention are explored. In particular, attempts are made to verify the presence of interaction between L2 vocabulary size of subjects in the SW group and their SW quality on the retention of target words and to examine whether a vocabulary gain through the SW task would occur effectively regardless of their L2 vocabulary size and quality of SW.
In this study, subjects were 127 undergraduate students from various academic fields at a local university in Busan, Korea and were asked to read two newspaper articles in English and perform their respective tasks in a treatment session. Data came from the Vocabulary Size Test (VST), the performance of each task, an immediate posttest and a delayed one, which was administered 2 weeks after the immediate one. The data is analyzed by a series of paired samples t-tests, one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs), split-plot ANOVAs, and multiple analyses of variance (MANOVAs).
The statistical assessment of the data from the analyses yielded the following results regarding four research questions: First, the SW group performed better than the other task groups in their L2 vocabulary retention on the whole, and the effects of the interaction between task type and text difficulty on short-term and long-term retention of L2 vocabulary were also found to be greater in SW then in the other tasks in a positive way; second, subject’s L2 vocabulary size did not account for their L2 vocabulary retention, and there existed no significant interaction between their L2 vocabulary size and text difficulty regarding short-term and long-term L2 vocabulary retention; third, the effects of the interaction between type of task and subjects’ L2 vocabulary were found to be non-significant; lastly, the effects of the interaction between subjects’ quality of SW and their L2 vocabulary size were not significant.
The findings of the current study may suggest that L1 summary writing tasks which have a relatively higher level of involvement load may provide students with more chances to retain new L2 words effectively regardless of subjects’ L2 vocabulary size and text difficulty. In addition, the quality of SW may not be conducive to more L2 vocabulary retention regardless of subjects’ level of L2 vocabulary size. The findings also suggest that the effects of the interaction between task type and students’ L2 vocabulary size do not seem to be large enough to explain that a certain task type would markedly improve their L2 vocabulary retention when the levels of L2 vocabulary size are concerned.
