This study aimed to investigate how the position of the Negative Polarity Item (NPI) within a sentence and its semantic intensity influence the NPI Illusion. Study 1 investigated the effects of the NPI ‘아무도(amudo)’ being placed either in the matrix or embedded clause, using a rating task and a self-paced reading task. The results showed that the NPI Illusion occurred regardless of its position in the rating task, but it occurred only when the NPI was in the embedded clause in the self-paced reading task. Study 2 examined the effects of the semantic intensity of different NPIs(weak/strong semantics). The results showed that the NPI Illusion was absent in the rating task regardless of semantic intensity, yet it occurred with both weak and strong NPIs in the self-paced reading task. Overall, the results indicate that the NPI Illusion is influenced by both structural position and the properties of the NPI, and stages of sentence processing also have an impact.
