This study examines the conceptual boundaries and interactions between word formation (словообразование) and derivation (деривация) in the Russian language, highlighting their roles as essential mechanisms in linguistic development. In Russian linguistics, the interchangeable use of these terms has led to significant terminological ambiguity and scholarly debate. The research aims to clarify the definitions and distinctions between the two concepts, introducing subcategories such as semantic derivation and semantic word formation to systematically analyze the processes of linguistic evolution. Semantic derivation expands or transforms existing meanings to form new connections, while semantic word formation stabilizes these changes as independent lexical units. Their interaction highlights complementary roles in language evolution. This study provides a clearer framework for understanding the interplay between derivation and word formation in Russian.
