This study examines the discourse marker ‘genre' in spoken French, focusing specifically on its meta-pragmatic functions within the ‘P1 genre P2' structure. Rather than viewing ‘genre’ as a simple hedging device experiencing semantic bleaching, this research demonstrates its role as a central element in discourse meaning construction. The study proposes an integrated explanatory model categorizing three primary functions of ‘genre': exemplification (clarifying abstract statements with concrete examples), semantic adjustment (modifying propositional scope and mitigating strong assertions), and distancing (creating cognitive space between speakers and their utterances through typified quotation). Through systematic analysis, the paper establishes that ‘genre' operates as a sophisticated meta-pragmatic device that enables speakers to reflexively organize their discourse and negotiate implicit meaning with listeners. This research contributes to discourse marker theory by demonstrating that ‘genre' is not merely a colloquial habit but a significant enunciative adjustment mechanism that structures communication through meta-pragmatic awareness.
