As cities become more complex, the development of underground spaces has become more active. With the opening of subways, underpasses were later developed into underground shopping malls. The narrow and unpleasant environment of these underground shopping malls causes physical and mental stress to users. Therefore, there are movements to improve the environment by utilizing idle spaces to provide rest areas and planning various wayfinding landmarks. This study aims to examine the biophilic design elements utilized in plazas within underground shopping malls and analyze their characteristics as wayfinding landmarks to explore directions for improving the environment of these malls. The analysis was conducted through searching the internet and on-site observations of selected underground shopping malls. The analysis results showed that when biophilic design was used in the plazas within underground shopping malls, it exhibited characteristics of a landmark. The biophilic design elements were mostly contrasted with the surrounding shops, making them discontinuous and easily identifiable from a distance. However, the specific characteristics of the landmark varied depending on how and where each element was used. This study aims to suggest directions for underground shopping malls that allow users to find their way easily and stably in the future.
