Second, based on previous, spatial characteristics of the atrium-type rest area in large shopping mall were identified for the checklist, and field survey was conducted. Finally, based on the checklist, spatial characteristics of the atrium-type rest area in large shopping mall were comprehensively analyzed. Based on theoretical study, comfort, aesthetics, accessibility, publicity, symbolism, and placeness were identified as spatial characteristics of the atrium-type rest space in shopping malls. In field survey, both cases showed strong results in comfort, aesthetics, symbolism, and placeness. For publicity, regardless of age or gender, users can rest in the rest area for a long time. However in some cases, even there are many bookshelves in the middle and can be used as a group, it’s inconvenient to walk when it’s crowded. In the case of accessibility, there were only direction signs on the floor, and there were no clear signs in other shopping spaces. Additional signs for rest areas are needed at entrances and lobbies of buildings where many people gather.
