This study examines the textbook translation and compilation efforts of Hyun Chae during the Korean Empire period, with a focus on history textbooks. Through this analysis, it aims to elucidate the historical significance of Joongdeunggyogwa Donggooksaryak (『中等敎科東國史略』) in history education. Hyun Chae, a former interpreter, utilized his linguistic proficiency and professional experience to serve as an official in the Ministry of Education from the 1890s, actively engaging in the translation and compilation of both government-commissioned and privately published textbooks. For him, textbook compilation was a means of disseminating modern Western knowledge (新學) through national education and fostering individuals capable of strengthening the Korean Empire. Among his various efforts, Hyun Chae prioritized the translation of foreign history books to compile world history textbooks that introduced the progressive trajectory and developmental aspects of Western history and contemporary international affairs. His historical and educational consciousness was also reflected in Korean history textbooks. While he translated Hayashi Taisuke’s historical works for the sections on “past history” (‘過去史’) and “present history” (‘現在史’), he deliberately authored the “future history” (‘未來史’) section himself. This section specifically detailed Japan’s aggressive expansion and directly identified Koreans (韓人) as the agents responsible for shaping the future of the Korean Empire. As a result, the “future history” section of Joongdeunggyogwa Donggooksaryak represented Hyun Chae’s attempt to implement a historical perspective centered on progress and development. At the same time, it functioned as a pedagogical approach to educate Koreans as agents of national self-strengthening through history education.
