The year 2024 marks the 130th anniversary of the outbreak of the First Sino-Japanese War, a conflict that is recognized as a significant turning point in modern East Asian history. Each country’s history textbooks describe the war differently, reflecting their respective historical perspectives and national memories. This study compares how high school history textbooks in South Korea, China, and Japan depict the First Sino-Japanese War and examines the reasons behind these differences.
China’s depiction of the war emphasizes its confrontation with foreign powers, highlighting the aggressiveness of imperialist nations and the resistance of the Chinese people. Additionally, it portrays China’s defeat as an unavoidable outcome, attributing it more to external pressure than to the failures of the Qing leadership. Furthermore, China implicitly describes the war as a turning point that led to the collapse of the traditional tributary system, positioning Korea and other neighboring countries as vassal states of the Qing dynasty.
In Japanese textbooks, the First Sino-Japanese War is presented within the context of Japan’s modernization and changes in its foreign policy, with a tendency to downplay the country’s imperialist aggression. At the same time, they emphasize the growth of national consciousness among the Japanese people and establish a connection to the Russo-Japanese War, highlighting Japan’s path to modernization and its ability to confront Western imperialist powers.
South Korean history textbooks emphasize Japan’s imperialist aggression and frame the war as a conflict between foreign powers over control of Korea. Within this perspective, the Donghak Peasant Movement is portrayed as an anti-foreign and anti-imperialist resistance. However, there is relatively little discussion of how the Korean government at the time responded to the war. The conflict between China and Japan over Korea is interpreted within the context of competition among imperialist powers, and Korea is generally presented as a victim of foreign intervention and aggression.
These differing portrayals of the First Sino-Japanese War in East Asian countries’ textbooks reflect each nation’s historical perspectives and educational objectives, with significant variations influenced by political and social contexts. This demonstrates how history education plays a crucial role in shaping collective memory and values by selectively emphasizing or omitting certain a spec ts of the past.
