Russia possesses vast forest resources, and its Far East and Siberian regions offer favorable conditions for exports due to their geographical proximity to Korea and abundant timber reserves. Given that Korea’s lumber self-sufficiency rate remains below 20%, there is considerable potential for cooperation between the two countries in the lumber sector. This study explores the opportunities and limitations of such collaboration.
As Russia has lost access to the European lumber market, it is making efforts to increase its lumber exports to the Asian market. Although Russian lumber is relatively high in quality and continues to show stable demand, trade volumes between Russia and Korea have declined due to market instability and payment risks caused by economic sanctions. As a result, Korean companies have diversified their suppliers by turning to Germany and Northern European countries, further accelerating the decline in Russian lumber imports. In addition, the emergence of new competitors has contributed to Russia’s loss of market share in Korea.
To address these challenges, this study proposes improving the quality and reliability of Russian lumber supply from the Far East region, utilizing an intermediary trade model to ensure secure payments, and diversifying the tree species exported.
