In the 9th year of Zhengtong(正統) reign (1444), Joseon repatriated some Japanese pirates(倭賊) who invaded the coast of Ming and fled to Joseon. Ming court in turn expressed his gratitude by sending miscellaneous silks to Sejong(世宗), the King of Joseon. In the 3rd year of Chenghua(成化) reign (1467), Joseon captured and sent Jurchens(女眞人) to the Ming, and Ming court delivered to King Sejo(世祖) 100 taels of silver, and four
bundles of brocade(錦), and 12 sets of inner and outer fabric(表裏). The case of reward at this time became the standard for the Ming Dynasty to provide gifts in return to Kings of Joseon, when Joseon sent prisoners or Chinese captives to the Ming court. There has been no previous ritual of ‘delivering prisoners(獻俘)’ by foreign countries around Ming, so no reward for delivering prisoners had been delivered to foreign countries. This was due to Joseon’s intention to perform the ritual by transferring prisoners directly to the Ming court. In particular, in 1480 the Joseon dynasty sent prisoners of war directly to Beijing(北京) so that the Ming Dynasty could conduct the ritual. After that, even when Joseon handed over Chinese people to the Ming court, who were drifted to Joseon coasts, Ming court applied this example to Joseon. Accordingly, a new provision named ‘the Statute for bestowal of gifts upon Joseon for its repatriation of Chinese people(朝鮮國送回人口例)’ was added to the Collected Statutes of the Ming Dynasty(大明會典), which was reconstructed during Wanli(萬曆) regin. This statute was applied not only to Joseon’s cases of delivering prisioners, but also to cases of other countries. In the 4th year of King 萬曆 (1576), when Spanish Luzon(呂宋) delivered prisoners captured in battle against a pirate force called the Linfeng(林鳳), Ming court applied the statue to Spanish Luzon. In the year of the Shunzhi(順治), an attempt were made to apply this statute to Annam(安南), i.e. Northern Vietnam, but Qing court stopped the attempt on the grounds that it was a case of ‘the late Ming court ignoring foreign countries’. In short, this statute was established based on the cases of sending Japanese pirates, Jurchens, and drifted Chinese to Ming captured by Joseon. Through the application of this statute, Ming court confirmed the ‘loyalty(忠順)’ of Joseon, while applying this statute to similar cases of repatriation of foreign prisoners and Chinese captives, thereby confirming the ‘loyalty’ of foreign countries.
