Currently, owing to rapid advancements in image processing technology, images are being used across a variety of domains, and their applications are increasing. However, the external environment may induce noise when specialized imaging equipment, such as CT and SEM, are used. A prevalent type of noise that may occur in images is additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), which can adversely affect the image analysis process. Numerous algorithms have been proposed for noise removal; nevertheless, their performance diminishes significantly with variations in noise size or image blurriness, leading to inadequate restoration performance. Consequently, this paper proposes a noise-reduction algorithm using 3D surface interpolation in an AWGN environment. The proposed algorithm divides the estimated noise magnitude into two categories based on pixel variation and eliminates noise using the interpolation value of the 3D surface constructed using a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS). The simulation results demonstrated a superior image restoration performance by effectively eliminating noise while maintaining the detailed characteristics of the image.
