The 16th-century Reformation in Europe took place within the context of the Renaissance, which emphasised the value of the individual, thereby exhibiting a profound interest in human dignity. Prominent figures of the Reformation, including Martin Luther and John Calvin, situated the idea of human dignity within the theological frameworks of God’s creation and/or salvation. However, as the Reformation progressed, they sanctioned the use of violence against those whose beliefs were in opposition to their theological ideals. The discourse on human dignity within Protestantism has inherited the ambivalent legacy of these Reformers and continues to grapple with these paradoxes and contradictions, as evidenced throughout history. This study aims, on the one hand, to analyse the theological structure of Protestantism’s ambiguous approach to human dignity and, on the other hand, to propose a new model that examines human dignity from a Christocentric perspective.
