A characteristic of Korea’s aging population is the rapid increase in the proportion of the elderly population. As of 2023, the elderly are 18.6% of the population, and the National Statistical Office predicts that it will be 40% by 2050. The United Nations defines more than 20% as a super-aged society, but it is difficult to explain the level of aging in Korea. Therefore, this study attempts to subdivide the super-aged society according to the characteristics of Korea. Based on the census data of the Statistics Korea, changes in the elderly population and trends over the next 30 years were identified. As a result of the study, the trend of increasing the elderly population has intensified since 2020 (when the baby boomers generation was incorporated into the elderly), and many regions have more than 40% of the elderly as of 2023. If progresses as the current trend continues, all 229 regions nationwide will become super-aged societies by 2038. In addition, there are some regions where the proportion of the elderly population, which continues to increase nationwide, decreases from 2053. Until 2053, the proportion of the elderly population in the super-aged society was examined by subdividing the section into the range of 5%. Based on the results of the survey, this study proposes a super-aged society of 20% or more and less than 35% as the first stage (super-aged society I), 35% or more and less than 50% as the second stage (super-aged society II), and 50% or more as the third stage (super-aged society III).
