Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of mothers’ self-esteem and perceived value of their children on parenting stress in mothers of infants. By understanding the factors that influence mothers’ psychological well-being and child development, this study aims to explore ways to reduce parenting stress. Methods : This study used data from 2,580 mothers in the Panel Study on Korean Children. Mothers’ self-esteem was measured using Rosenberg’s (1989) scale, perceived value of children with Lee et al. (2005), and parenting stress with Kim and Kang’s (1997) scale. Reliability for the scales ranged from .722 to .890. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, reliability tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression using SPSS 28.0. Results : Correlation analysis showed that mothers’ self-esteem and emotional value of children were negatively correlated with parenting stress, while the instrumental value of children had a weaker negative correlation. Multiple regression analysis revealed that self-esteem, emotional value, and instrumental value of children all had significant negative effects on parenting stress, with the model explaining 39.8% of the variance. Self-esteem had the strongest influence, followed by emotional value and instrumental value. Conclusion : This study found that mothers’ self-esteem and perceived value of their children had a negative impact on parenting stress, with self-esteem having the strongest influence. The results suggest that mothers’ psychological characteristics and perceptions of their children play a crucial role in reducing parenting stress.
