The Water-side Economizer system (WSE) is mainly applied to buildings that generate annual cooling loads, and it is a method to save energy by producing chilled water using the low outdoor temperature in winter and mid-season and reducing the operation time of the chiller. Although many previous studies have been conducted, there are few cases on the verification and quantification of the effectiveness of the WSE system using actual operation data. Therefore, in this study, we introduced WSE system to the heat source system of a special laboratory located in Suwon that generates annual cooling loads, and the effectiveness verification by using actual operation data and quantify the effectiveness by simulation of the WSE system. To verify the energy saving effect of WSE system, the operation data before and after the use of the WSE system and the power consumption data stored in the Building Automation System (BAS) were compared, as a result of the verification, the power consumption of the target heat source system was reduced by 42% when the WSE system was operated compared to Chiller cooling system operated. And a physics-based simulation for the target heat source was developed and calibrated using actual operation data to improve accuracy. To quantify the annual energy saving effect of the WSE system, the average saving effect of WSE system operation according to outdoor conditions for the past five years was calculated using the calibrated simulation model. As a result, it was analyzed that the heat source system power consumption could be reduced by 52.8% through WSE system.
