This essay explores how the recent surge in book history provides richer contexts and methodological complexities for understanding female literary and material engagements in early modern bookscapes. It first explores the ways in which discussions of the “bookscape” as a material and conceptual category can redefine the scope and methodologies of early modern literary studies. It then examines new evidence regarding female book ownership, unpacking early modern women’s libraries and their literary, cultural, and social implications. These efforts to reconstruct the libraries of early modern women encourage a more egalitarian approach to research, one relying on scholarly collaboration and cooperation. Throughout the essay, I consider the value of digital literacy in the study of women’s book ownership, and its interdisciplinary application to the evolving field of early modern studies.
