The aim of this study was to understand Taoist thought in the Kang Jeungsan tradition in a three-dimensional and essential way by examining the connection between Jeungsan thought and Taoist thought and by tracing the basis of the acceptance of Taoist thought in Jeungsan thought. Previous studies of Taoist thought within the Jeungsan thought system have been summarized in Lee Hyung-hwa’s critical perspective, Lee Kang-oh’s explanation of heaven and earth as a Taoist act, Kim Hong-cheol’s view of pre-eminence, Kim Tak’s view of hierarchy, Jeong Jae-seo’s holistic approach to Taoism, and Ko Nam-sik’s examination of the Taoist character of the endless mukyodo within Daesoon thought. These previous studies focused on Jeung San’s acceptance of Taoism and the expulsion of Taoist elements from his thought system. However, there remained a need to analyze the nature of the Taoist elements that Jeung San embraced, trace the origins of Taoist ideas in his thought, address the proportion of his embrace of the superiority or inferiority of the virtuous and the unvirtuous, and compare and contrast the reappropriation of Taoist ideas in his sect. In particular, the background of the acceptance of the Tao Te Ching statue by the Jeungshan sect was underdeveloped in the current literature. Previous discussions have addressed the assumption of the acceptance of the Taoist statue and the manifestations that followed. However, the question of why Jeung San embraced Taoism so heavily had not been explored in depth and was not well understood. Therefore, this study focused on the reasons behind Jeung San’s acceptance of Taoist thought. Specifically, it examined his religious worldview through the explanations given in the Taoist scriptures 태평경 and drew out the common denominators between his thought and Taoist thought. By explaining the reappropriation of Taoist thought by Jeungsan thought, and by centering on the Jumbok, True Wealth, and Kwonseonseo faiths, this study found Jeungsan’s acceptance of Taoist thought to be a means of responding to the people and edifying them. This study contributed to a more three-dimensional and essential understanding of Jeungsan thought by identifying the background of Jeungsan’s acceptance of Taoism. The study findings serve as a cornerstone for revealing the uniqueness of Korean new religious thought.
