In this paper, we present the detailed meanings of the predicate ‘seltukhata (persuade),’ which previous studies have often regarded as having a singular meaning, by examining its different constructions. First, we differentiate between the construction emphasizing the persuasive message, ‘S-ko V,’ and the construction emphasizing the persuasive method, ‘VP-tolok V.’ We then examine the sub-constructions of these two primary constructions. The former is divided into two sub-constructions based on the complement clause. The ‘S-ko V’ construction asserts the truth of the complement clause, while the ‘VP-ko V’ construction directs the execution of the complement clause. The latter construction, ‘VP-tolok V,’ is also subdivided. The ‘N-ka N-lul/ekey VP-tolok V’ construction emphasizes the causative meaning, whereas the ‘N-ka S-tolok V’ construction emphasizes the purpose. Furthermore, in the ‘N-ka VP-tolok N-ul V’ construction, the argument nature of the complement clause is weakened, and if the persuasive message is contextually unnecessary, it forms the typical transitive construction ‘N-ka N-lul V.’ On the other hand, the concept of persuasion can be seen as an integration of two events, and the various constructions that the predicate ‘seltukhata’ realizes show differences in the degree of integration between these events. That is, the construction that emphasizes the persuasive message, ‘S-ko V,’ can be considered to have a lower degree of integration compared to the construction that emphasizes the method of persuasion, ‘VP-tolok V.’
