One of the works of the “Nekono–yomeiri” Group, “Oborozuki-nekono- yomeiri”(①), published in 1806 by Somahito, is based on Tsusho’s “Saru-okosama Onnozomini-tsuki Nekono-yomeiri”(②), published in 1782, 24 years earlier. I compared and examined both works while quoting the text. As a result, four methods were identified in Somahito’s use of his source material: copying (A), copying and augmentation (B), copying and change (C), and creation (D). Specifically, ① is used in a total of 12 scenes, four of which were creative (D) and eight of which were mainly copies (A), or involved copying with additions and changes (B and C). In other words, while copying the sentences in ② in order, even the expressions of the original text are used in several places, so this can be regarded as evidence of direct imitation of ②. Furthermore, the illustrations match the gestures and postures of the characters, the direction in which they turn, their gender, clothing, facial expressions, the positions of tools, and even the structure of the room. I regard these as proof that the original was copied. However, no matter how much ① focused on imitation, there was no case where the scene, the text, and the illustrations in ② were all “copy(A)”. For example, if the text is mainly an imitation (A), the illustrations were devised (B, C, D). Summarizing Somahito’s adaptation method, the characteristics include commentary on words, alterations, decorations, an increase in types, and an overhead view.
